The Hazel Sawfly Larvae and Adult ♂
It also feeds on Silver Birch, and Alder leaves. They hold their bodies up in a double curve formation as a form of defence, which to my eyes make them look far more conspicuous than they would be in their feeding position.. In the feeding position, in which they are laid out at the leaf edge with a single curve at their posterior end, they could, and by my reckoning, often are, overlooked. The adult male is quite striking , my photo does it no favours at all, there’ll be a next time, I’m sure.
